Private Property: Do Not Cross! – An illustrated short-story

Posted by Knonie
I wrote this short story in November 2010. It’s somewhat incomplete but I didn’t feel like completing it so I’m sharing it here. I designed some images to go with this story, which are also shared below.

I am a small bird. I’m not a small bird. I’m a fully grownup bird, but for you I’m a small bird. For me, Humans are so big, so big and so different from each other. I wanted to see what they do all day, how they gather food, how they live in safe places, and all the other things I cannot do. So I flew, leaving my nest, towards a city of Humans.

From a distance, everything appeared so different. On reaching a house, I landed on a window sill. As I peeped into the clear window pane, it was yet another world inside. There was a woman in the room looking herself in a large mirror delicately adjusting the straps of her brassiere over her shoulders. There was a man sitting at a distance watching her casually. I admired the beauty of human body and its perfection. The little piece of clothes she was wearing was enhancing the appeal. That women then took another larger piece of apparel, a silk gown, and put that on. While she was arranging the locks of her hair, I thought why she has to cover herself in that gown and why they need to hide their beauty, but the dust-covered window sill made me realise that it must be the dust of the outside world from which these women fear.

My chain of thoughts was interrupted by a very loud sound coming somewhere from the sky. I flew further towards the city and that sound continued to come. It came from a building having very high minarets. It was a mosque. I came closer and sat over a dome. First, that sound appeared pleasant, but then it was mingled by many more distant sounds of similar nature, making it impossible to hear what they are saying. I thought, do these humans really understand these loud sounds I just heard. I started to lose my nerves and flew off.

I reached a market, and there was a row of stalls selling food and other items. It was so strange to find that humans eat such variety of food. People were eating and drinking from different places, each having their own type of choices. Everyone was talking to someone around, and they have so many words I cannot understand. We wake up in the morning, gather food, build and protect our nest, choose partners and lay eggs–what else is there to do all day?! I failed to understand what humans talk and why they talk all day, and why don’t they like the same kind of food and same kind of language.

It was evening and I was so tired after flying all day. I saw a park full of trees where I landed near a bush. It was a calm park in the evening. There was only an old man walking briskly on the path in sweaty clothes who left as I came. I was scratching the earth for some food when suddenly I heard a low laugh like sound. I thought I was alone in the park. I looked around and found that two figures are still present there sitting on a bench in a darker corner of the park under the trees. It was quite hard to observe them. I then heard a feeble sound quite near me. It was a bug. I silently followed it but city bugs seemed a little more cunning. It tried to fly away, but I finally caught it. I was feeling victorious as if I have conquered the entire Human land. After finishing off my nutritious evening meal, it was even darker and I decided to return to my nest. As I was leaving the park, the park lights were turned on and I saw two boys leaving the bench and exiting the park.

Although, I’m a fully grownup bird, but I am a small bird.
